Setting off, a solo traveller, a few days alone in the North of Scotland before the start of the Shiatsu Summer Camp. There are lots of Mackays up there, apparently. Stopping off to change trains, Glasgow becomes southerly - a beautiful journey onwards up the West Coast, and a boat over to Inverie on the Knoydart peninsula.
The Knoydart estate was bought by the local community in 1999, and is managed to support the people of the area as well as the natural environment. The Highland Clearances in the 19th century reduced the population of the peninsula (at least partially by force) from nearly 1000 in 1841 to around 100 now. There is work afoot to build new affordable homes, and to regenerate the local buildings as well as planting a lot of trees. The community hall and community pub had been lovingly and beautifully revamped with wood from local trees.
Arriving, I was pleased to find my 'wee hoose' and settle in. It was cold for June, but not much worse than Manchester! A couple of days for walking, exploring and arriving, before my Shiatsu colleagues, students and teachers arrived. I was looking forward to being a participant, and not an organiser, for once!
