Shiatsu in pregnancy and maternity care

Fertility. Pregnancy. Birth. Parenthood.

Are you looking for

a relaxing, effective treatment which is safe during pregnancy?

natural alternatives around labour and birth?

a quiet space to connect with yourself and your baby?

Shiatsu can help in all these ways and more during pregnancy.

I have completed specialist training in using shiatsu during maternity care, with Wellmother.

Shiatsu is a safe and relaxing treatment which is appropriate throughout pregnancy, as well as in labour and the postnatal period. I will choose suitable techniques for you - these are likely to be particularly gentle during the first three to four months of pregnancy.

During pregnancy shiatsu can help you to connect with yourself and your baby; reduce symptoms associated with pregnancy such as nausea, back pain, SPD; and help you to relax and boost your energy.

If your baby is overdue, shiatsu can help to start labour (research by Ingram, Domagala and Yates (2005)).

In labour, shiatsu can be used to reduce pain and help you to follow your energy. I have attended three births; I can also teach points and techniques to your birth partner.

In the post-natal period shiatsu can be used to help with breast-feeding; help to release any trauma from the birth process; and support your energy and your connection with your baby. Supporting the mother with shiatsu can be benefical to the baby. You can also learn shiatsu points that may help your baby. I offer clients a home visit as soon after the birth as they would like it.

"I found the Shiatsu Massage of Hannah really beneficial both physically and emotionally during my pregnancy. It was a wonderful experience which allowed me to relax and reduce some tensions in my back. After each session I was energised and calm and I am sure my baby too. Moreover, I could received numerous of advice from Hannah concerning positioning, breathing and auto-massage. I would greatly recommand her to every mum-to-be." FL, 2018

"Hannah saw me a week after I had given birth. My labour was long and at the end of a 24 hour period, I pushed for 6 hours before delivering my baby boy via forceps. Following the birth I was exhausted and as a first time mum, I was concerned for my baby, who I felt had a difficult time during the birth too. I felt very guilty about not getting him out 'safely' as he has a mark on his face from the forceps. I couldn't sleep because I was so worried about him, which didn't help the post labour tiredness and I felt vulnerable with my post birth symptoms. Hannah was excellent; she worked with me over a few sessions to re- centre myself, to soothe my muscular and post birth pain and to relax, both physically and emotionally. An hour with Hannah allowed me to take care of myself so that I could be there for my newborn baby when I returned home.

Through her work she also was able to provide emotional support; I now view my birth very differently. Having processed it in all its full glory, I see it as long, petrifying at points and painful, but also as a huge achievement, a beautiful and special experience that celebrates the strength of a woman and most importantly the day that my amazing son was born. Hannah offers a very empowering supportive service that I believe all new mum's would benefit from to help support them back to full health following birth." Jess, 2018
